Capitol Peak
May 9, 2010

Partners: Jordan White, Jarrett Luttrell, Matt Kamper

Route Description: From Snowmass Creek Trailhead. Skied upper East Face and Secret Chute.

Data: Began with Jarrett at 6:45 pm from Snowmass Creek Trailhead (8,390 ft). We hiked up the trial until dark to about 9,700 ft, where we set up a bivy on relatively flat ground. We left from camp at 2 am, meeting up with Jordan and Matt at the same time, and continued up to Moon Lake and from there up to One-In-A-Million Couloir (also known as Pierre's Passage) at about 13,200 ft. Reached this around 7:30 am and skied down SE-facing couloir around 8, descending approximately 500'. Traversed over to bottom of east face of Capitol and began ascending the Secret Chute. Reached top of Secret chute and climbed East Face and ridge of Capitol to summit. Reached summit (14,130 ft) around 1 pm and began descending shortly after. Descended via ridge, East Face, and Secret Chute. Secret Chute required a rappel. Reached bottom of East Face (Capitol Lake) around 3:30 pm. Traversed and ascended One-In-A-Million Couloir and descended to Moon Lake and back to camp. Reached camp around 5:30, packed up, and left around 6:15. Reached Snowmass Creek Trailhead at 10 pm. Total vert climbed: ~6250 ft. Total vert skied: 5100 ft. Total time: 27.25 hr, including overnight bivy.
